Kitty Hawk, NC
Sandy Run Park is a passive recreational facility on 11 acres of wetlands (coastal and 404), tidal canals, ponds and forested sand ridges. The property was gifted to the Town and a PARTF grant was secured to fund improvements. Rivers’ services were engaged for design development, environmental permit acquisition and construction administration services for the implementation of the initial park development. The project was design and CAMA Major / COE 404 permits secured for facilities consisting of 1/2-mile interpretive nature walk trail incorporating elevated boardwalks, pedestrian bridges and elevated gazebos with canoe/kayak docks and fishing platforms. Related trailhead facilities include canoe/kayak launch, dock and fishing pier. Other trailhead recreational amenities include horseshoe pit, shuffleboard court, half-court basketball, picnic tables/grills, picnic shelter and parking facilities.
The site design included a connection from the trailhead to the Woods Road multi-use path to facilitate multi-modal access to the park. Due to funding constraints, Rivers recommended a successful phasing plan with the initial phase implementing the trailhead facilities and amenities, pedestrian bridges and 1/4-mile of the nature walk. Implementation of the gazebos and additional trails were postponed to future development phases.
