The campus of Martin Community College is located within the Roanoke River Basin. Needing to make drainage improvements to eliminate flooding on campus, Rivers was engaged to conduct a drainage study and provide a stormwater infrastructure improvements plan. Lacking funds for project implementation, Rivers assisted the College coordinate with North Carolina State University’s (NCSU) Cooperative Extension Service to secure grants from the Clean Water Management Trust Fund (CWMTF). With the help of NCSU and non-profit groups, a plan was set into motion to implement improvements. The plan included rehabilitation of existing drainage pipe with liners, providing educational BMP’s incorporating stream restoration, pipe removal to “daylight” drainage, rain gardens, grassed swales, bioretention cells and a stormwater retention pond. In addition to the initial project planning, Rivers provided design, permitting and construction administration services.
